Online lyric site Genius hid morse code message in song lyrics to catch Google stealing them


The lyric site Genius was certain that Google was republishing their lyrics without permission, so they devised a clever steganographic method to catch Google stealing. By using a combination of straight and curly apostrophes, Genius secretly embedded the phrase “Red Handed” in certain song lyrics:

To no surprise, Genius then saw the hidden message in Google lyrics, thus confirming their suspicion. Ironically, Google used a similar stenographic method to catch Bing stealing search results by purposefully creating nonsense search terms which later surfaced in Bing’s results.
