Smoke alarm uses wasabi to wake up deaf people in emergencies

The 2011 Ig Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to the researchers who created a smoke detector alarm for deaf people. Since they can’t hear traditional sound based alarms, the alarm releases wasabi scent that burns the nostrils and wakes them up. This mechanism isn’t limited to smoke detectors and could be used for a variety of emergency alarms.
